Frequently Asked Questions
You must be aged between 4 and 17 years old to qualify for a UK Child Student Visa.
A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS Letter) contains a reference number issued by your independent school once they’ve offered you a place. You need this to apply for your Child Student Visa, and you must apply within 6 months of receiving it.
If applying from outside the UK, a decision is usually issued within 3 weeks, or within 2 working days if you opt for the Super Priority Service (available in select locations such as Dubai, New York, Istanbul, and Rome) for an additional £1,000–£1,200. For applications submitted inside the UK, the standard processing time is typically up to 8 weeks.
This depends on your living arrangements and school tuition fees. For example, if boarding at a residential school, you need to show boarding fees for one academic year. If living independently aged 16-17 in London, you need £1,529 per month for up to nine months for living costs plus any outstanding day school fees.
You must have held the required funds for at least 28 consecutive days, ending not more than 31 days before your visa application date.
If your visa is approved, you can travel to the UK up to 1 month before your course starts (or 7 days if there’s less than 1 month until the start date).
If you’re under 16, you can stay for the duration of your course or 6 years, whichever is shorter. If you’re 16 or 17, you can stay for the duration of your course or 3 years, whichever is shorter.
Yes, if you’re aged 16 or 17, you can work for a maximum of 10 hours per week during term time and full-time during vacations.
If applying from outside the UK, apply no more than 6 months before your course starts. If applying from within the UK, apply no earlier than 3 months before your course starts.
If you’re 16 or 17 years old, the Home Office will assess whether you’re a genuine student by looking at your immigration history, education history, course details, reasons for studying in the UK, post-study plans, and financial circumstances.
Yes, if you’re aged between 4 and 11, one parent can apply for a Parent of a Child Student Visa to care for you in the UK. The other parent must not be in the UK or seeking to come.
Yes, you can extend your stay if you remain aged between 4 and 17, are sponsored by an independent school, have an unconditional offer, and can show sufficient funds. There’s no requirement to show academic progress.
No, the Child Student route is not a direct pathway to settlement. However, time spent in the UK on a Child Student Visa can count towards the 10-year long residence route to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), provided you meet all the continuous residence requirements.
You can study a wide range of courses at independent schools, including GCSE, A-levels, International Baccalaureate (IB), and other qualifications that meet the National Curriculum or Recognised Qualification Framework standards, as well as courses approved by education inspection bodies like Ofsted.
Yes, Child Student Visa holders are permitted to switch into the Student route.
Yes, if you’ve been in the UK with valid leave for at least 12 months before applying, or if you’re a British National (Overseas) or from certain specified countries subject to the ‘differential evidence requirement’. If you are a national of any of the following countries, you may be subject to the differential evidence requirement and could automatically satisfy the Child Student Visa financial requirement, though UKVI reserves the right to request evidence of funds. These countries include Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Barbados, Belgium, Botswana, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, China, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, The Dominican Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Tunisia, UAE, and USA.
Yes, if you have valid leave to remain and don’t currently have permission as a Visitor, Short-term Student, or outside the Immigration Rules, and you’re not on immigration bail.
We can advise on making a fresh application or challenging the decision through Administrative Review (if the rules weren’t applied correctly) or sending Pre-Action-Protocol for Judicial Review (if the decision was unlawful or unreasonable).
Yes, you must have the consent of your parent(s) or legal guardian to apply for a Child Student Visa.
Your CAS must include details of the course you’ll be studying, the cost of accommodation, tuition fees, and any payments already made. It must be issued by a licensed student sponsor and cannot have been used in a previous application.
